Listing issues: Return policy is missing

A clear return policy is essential for building trust with potential buyers on Etsy. It not only sets expectations but also demonstrates your commitment to customer satisfaction. Without a defined return policy, shoppers may hesitate to purchase, fearing potential complications if they're unsatisfied with a product.

What Etsy recommends

Etsy recommends utilizing all 10 images for your listings. E-commerce best practices say that you should at least have 5 images. This makes it easier for the buyer to make the purchase decision as it gives your listing enough opportunities to answer their doubts or questions about the product.

Etsy emphasizes the importance of setting return policies for each physical listing in the Etsy Seller Handbook:

"Your listings should also include a return policy so that buyers know whether you accept returns or exchanges before they make a purchase. You don’t have to offer returns or exchanges on your items unless it’s required where you live."

For instance, sellers based in the European Union are required by law to accept returns from their European customers. But what about sellers outside of the EU? Etsy also clarifies what it means for these sellers in its guidelines:

"If you’re a seller outside of the EU, you must set a return policy whenever you edit or create a new listing for a physical item, even if it is to let buyers know you do not accept returns or exchanges on that listing."

This ensures transparency and helps manage buyer expectations effectively.

Example:

Consider a shop selling handmade leather wallets. A comprehensive return policy might state:

"We gladly accept returns and exchanges. Please contact us within 14 days of delivery, and ship items back within 30 days of delivery. Buyers are responsible for return shipping costs. If the item is not returned in its original condition, the buyer is responsible for any loss in value."

This policy clearly outlines the timeframe and conditions for returns, providing clarity for buyers.

Do’s & Don’ts

Do:

  • Clearly state whether you accept returns or exchanges.
  • Specify the timeframe within which returns or exchanges are accepted.
  • Detail any conditions, such as the item's condition upon return and who bears the return shipping costs.

Don’t:

  • Leave the return policy section blank or vague.
  • Use ambiguous language that could confuse buyers.
  • Forget to update your return policy for each listing, especially if policies vary between products.
